Bamboo Train

Battambang is now about the only place where it is still possible to experience the norry (nori). Cambodian Railways are in the midst of a controversial rehabilitation project and the southern line between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville is likely to be completed sometime before mid 2013.

For years train services were limited and then non existent. People to meet their transport needs used wooden platforms running a set of wheels powered by a small engine. When one norry met another they simply disassembled one and let the other pass.

This is one of the great railway experiences of the world but certainly not the most comfortable. However, the days of the bamboo train are limited and it is likely to last until 2015 at the very latest.

Today the bamboo train’s last stronghold is around Battambang and is largely for tourists. They run between O Dambong and O Sra Lav station.
