Here in China, we’re enjoying a staycation boom.

With external travel off the cards for the Chinese and Covid all but vanquished, domestic tourism is thriving. Mark Andrews reports from a bustling Shanghai

I’m sipping champagne atop the Hyatt on the Bund hotel, staring out across the multibillion-pound Shanghai skyline. There’s a slight autumnal chill in the air, but it’s invigorating rather than off-putting. It’s a view one could never tire of — the Huangpu River snaking below, the futuristic Pudong skyline, and in the other direction the neoclassical architecture of the Bund and old Shanghai. Beyond the enormous bauble of the Oriental Pearl TV tower I see the light display on the Aurora Plaza building change. “I love Shanghai,” it says — a sentiment shared by all of those lucky enough to be here.

While many countries are being ravaged by a second wave of Covid-19, here there’s barely a mask in sight. And that’s not unusual.
